A great philosopher once said, “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” When I look back upon the most profound experience of my life as a soldier in the Vietnam war, I have come to realize the deep impact that the dead have upon the living.

I was drafted in 1969, and served my country in the jungles of ‘Nam in 1970 with the 101st Airborne. Our “point” man, Earl Edward McCarty (Panel 4W, Row 12) and his “slack” man, Gale Hill, were childhood friends who entered the Army on the Buddy Program, trained together in Basic and Advanced Individual Training before being sent to Vietnam, and were assigned to the same unit, same squad in Vietnam.

In 1971, after I returned to the United States, I learned that Eddie had been killed by an errant artillery round fired by the ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam), our allies during the war. The loss was devastating to Gale, whom I was informed refused to leave Eddie’s body, which had suffered shrapnel wounds causing his death.

It was years later that I understood the impact of Eddie’s death, and that he had had a secret. I had written a memorial regarding Eddie on an online website which was read by one of his cousins. She contacted me and I provided her with photos of Eddie in Vietnam, and answered questions which helped with their family’s healing.

Eddie’s cousin related that when he came home on leave prior to going to overseas, Eddie had a premonition that he would not come back alive from Vietnam. It was a difficult time for him, and he was undecided about what to do. His mother and father told him that he didn’t have a choice, that he had to go serve his country, and make them proud of him.

When Eddie was killed by “friendly fire,” his mother gave up on her life. His father always said that she died of a broken heart because she made Eddie feel ashamed enough to go to Vietnam. Eddie’s mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness, but never even tried to fight it or help herself. Eddie’s father never remarried.

Eddie’s best friend, Gale, returned to the United States, married, and had a daughter whom he named Eddye after his lifelong friend. Gale was involved in an auto accident which left him completely blind. When contacted, Gale said that he could not remember anything, not even what company or battalion he was in during the war. When asked if he knew the whereabouts of anyone else we served with, Gale stated, “I only know where Eddie is.”

Criminals do not care about gun control laws. They don't care about laws period. That's why they're criminals. Gun control laws are all about controlling law abiding citizens. People have a right to defend themselves against criminals and a tyrannical government.

The One Dollar Bill

On the rear of the One Dollar bill, you’ll see two circles. Together, they comprise the Great Seal of the United States. The First Continental Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and a group of men come up with a Seal. It took them four years to accomplish this task and another two years to get it approved.

If you look at the left-hand circle, you’ll see a Pyramid.

Notice the face is lighted, and the western side is dark. This country was just beginning. We hadn’t begun to explore the west or decide what we could do for Western Civilization. The Pyramid is uncapped, again signifying that we weren’t even close to being finished. Inside the Capstone you have the all-seeing eye, an ancient symbol for divinity. It was Franklin's belief that one man couldn't do it alone, but a group of men, with the help of God, could do anything.

“IN GOD WE TRUST” is on this currency.

The Latin above the pyramid, ANNUIT COEPTIS, means, “God has favored our undertaking.”

The Latin below the pyramid, NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM, means, “a new order has begun.”

At the base of the pyramid is the Roman numeral for 1776. (MDCCLXXVI)

If you look at the right-hand circle, and check it carefully, you’ll learn that it’s on every National Cemetery in the United States. It’s also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida National Cemetery, and is the centerpiece of most heroes' monuments.
Slightly modified, it’s the seal of the President of the United States, and it’s always visible whenever he speaks, yet very few people know what the symbols mean.

The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons:
First, he isn’t afraid of a storm; he’s strong, and he’s smart enough to soar above it.
Secondly, he wears no material crown. We had just broken from the King of England.
Also, notice the shield is unsupported. This country can now stand on its own.
At the top of the shield there’s a white bar signifying congress, a unifying factor. We were coming together as one nation.
In the Eagle's beak you read, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” meaning, “from many – one.”

Above the Eagle, we have the thirteen stars, representing the thirteen original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away. Again, we were coming together as one.

Notice what the Eagle holds in his talons. He holds an olive branch and arrows. This country wants peace, but we will never be afraid to fight to preserve peace. The Eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his gaze turns toward the arrows.
An (untrue) old-fashioned belief says that the number 13 is an unlucky number which is almost a worldwide belief. You’ll almost never see a room numbered 13, or any hotels or motels with a 13th floor. But think about this:
America, which relies on God (not a number) to direct and lead, boldly chose:

13 original colonies,
13 signers of the Declaration of Independence ,
13 stripes on our flag,
13 steps on the pyramid,
13 letters in “Annuit Coeptis,”
13 letters in “E Pluribus Unum,”
13 stars above the eagle,
13 bars on that shield,
13 leaves on the olive branch,
13 fruits,
and if you look closely,
13 arrows.
And finally, notice the arrangement of the 13 stars in the right-hand circle. You’ll see that they are arranged as a Star of David.

This was ordered by George Washington who, when he asked Haym Solomon, a wealthy Philadelphia Jew, what he would like as a personal reward for his services to the Continental Army. Solomon said he wanted nothing for himself, but he would like something for his people. The Star of David was the result. Few people know it was Solomon who saved the Army through his financial contributions ... then died a pauper. Haym Solomon gave $25 million to save the Continental Army, money that was sorely needed to help realize America's and our freedom and independence from England.

Therein lies America's Judeo-Christian beginning.
Most American children do NOT know any of this. They aren’t taught because their history teachers do NOT know this. (They were not taught!)
On America's Freedom:
Too many veterans gave up too much to let the meaning fade.
Many veterans came home to an America that did not care.
Too many veterans never came home at all.
They served, they died for you and for me.

There is a time to take counsel of your fears, and there is a time to never listen to any fear.

Prepare for the unknown by studying how others in the past have coped with the unforeseeable and the unpredictable.

Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash.

The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his.

Dalai Lama's Routine Day

When asked by people how His Holiness the Dalai Lama sees himself, he replies that he is a simple Buddhist monk.

His Holiness is often out of Dharamsala on travels both within India and abroad. During these travels, His Holiness's daily routine varies depending on his engagement schedule. However, His Holiness is an early riser and tries as far as possible to retire early in the evening.

When His Holiness is at home in Dharamsala, he wakes up at 3 am. After his morning shower, His Holiness begins the day with prayers, meditations and prostrations until 5 am. From 5 am His Holiness takes a short morning walk around the residential premises. If it is raining outside, His Holiness has a treadmill to use for his walk. Breakfast is served at 5.30 am. For breakfast, His Holiness typically has hot porridge, tsampa (barley powder), bread with preserves, and tea. Regularly during breakfast, His Holiness tunes his radio to the BBC World News in English. From 6 am to 9 am His Holiness continues his morning meditation and prayers. From around 9 am he usually spends time studying various Buddhist texts and commentaries written by great Buddhist masters. Lunch is served from 11.30 am. His Holiness's kitchen in Dharamsala is vegetarian. However, during visits outside of Dharamsala, His Holiness is not necessarily vegetarian. Following strict vinaya rules, His Holiness does not have dinner. Should there be a need to discuss some work with his staff or hold some audiences and interviews, His Holiness will visit his office from 12.30 pm until around 3.30 pm. Typically, during an afternoon at the office one interview is scheduled along with several audiences, both Tibetan and non-Tibetan. Upon his return to his residence, His Holiness has his evening tea at around 5 pm. This is followed by his evening prayers and meditation. His Holiness retires in the evening by around 7 pm.

1. Early Times (1000 BCE - 135 CE)

586 (BCE) - The Babylonians
After the fall of the Assyrian Empire the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar II, conquered Jerusalem. The most influential Jews of Judea were deported to Babylon (in southern Mesopotamia, today Iraq). The first Jewish temple in Jerusalem was destroyed.

538 (BCE) - The Persians
King Cyrus of Persia (today Iran) conquered the entire Babylonian Empire, allowed the exiled Jews to return from Babylon, and accepted a form of Jewish home rule in Jerusalem. The Jewish temple was rebuilt.

332 (BCE) - The Greeks
The Greek-Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great destroyed the Persian Empire, thereby gaining control over Judea. After the death of Alexander his Hellenistic (Greek) Empire was divided into three parts, and the Jews got squeezed between the competing Greek rulers.

164 (BCE) - The Maccabees
A Jewish tribe, the "Maccabees", revolted against the Hellenistic occupiers, and from 142 BCE and the following 80 years Judea once again was an independent, Jewish state.

63 (BCE) - The Roman Conquest
The Romans invaded Greece and also conquered the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire in the Middle East. Though the Jews were granted some measure of autonomy in Jerusalem, Judea was in reality ruled from Rome.

37 (BCE) - Herod The Great
Following a failed Jewish rebellion, the Romans turned Judea into a regular Roman province, and installed the Jewish King Herod the Great as administrator. After his death in 4 BCE the province was divided between Herod's sons. One of them, Herod Antipas, who is best known for his role in the New Testament, administered Galilee in the north and Perea to the east (the east bank of the Jordan River, today part of the Kingdom of Jordan).

70 - The Destruction of Jerusalem
The Roman Emperor Titus quashed yet another Jewish rebellion. The Jewish temple and the rest of Jerusalem were reduced to rubble. A group of especially persistent Jews sought refuge on the mountain of Masada in the desert near the Dead Sea, but were three years later defeated by the Romans.

135 - Judea Renamed Palestine
During a final Jewish uprising against the Romans (the Bar Kochva Revolt) Jerusalem was once again, for a short, three-year period, under Jewish control. After the Romans' inevitable, crushing victory many hundreds of thousands of Jews were either deported, sold as slaves or killed. The Roman Emperor Hadrian leveled Jerusalem to the ground, and barred Jews from entering the city.

In an attempt at definitively eliminating the Jewish connection to the land, the Romans renamed Judea to "Palaestina", a word believed to be derived from the "Philistines", a people from Crete, which a thousand years earlier roamed the Mediterranean coast of Judea. Yesterday, the House passed the Preventing Executive Overreach on Immigration Act, a bill preventing the president from delaying deportation for illegal immigrants. It passed 219-197 with only seven Republicans opposed and three others voting present.

The bill is D.O.A. in Harry Reid's Senate.

It appears to be a "meaningless show vote" to defuse conservative anger.

House Speaker Boehner is planning to avoid a government showdown by supporting The Continuing Resolution/Omnibus appropriation bill, aka "cromnibus". That bill will fund the government through September of next year except for Homeland Security, the agency which would implement the president’s executive order on immigration. DHS would only be funded only through March 2015.

According to Boehner, the Republicans will have more leverage to go after the president’s executive overreach amnesty executive order when they have more power in the 114th Congress. Yet, the DHS will start implementing the EO immediately.

This is a political shell game with the voters being played as suckers.

I Didn't Know That...

Fall gets its name from the longer phrase fall of the leaf that was first used in the mid-1500s. (Spring comes from a similar phrase: spring of the leaf.) Fall took hold in America more than it did in Britain, and in the US, fall is the standard season name.

Capitalism

There are two ways in which anything can be exchanged: peaceful or violent. A peaceful exchange is if you do something good for me, I'll do something good for you. Capitalism is the epitome of a peaceful means of exchange. A violent means of exchange is if you don't do something good for me, I'm going to do something bad for you. There are two major objections to capitalism which can be refuted: 1) It encourages greed. In a true market economy capitalism neutralizes greed. A greedy man must think of others first to give people a reason to come back to his business. 2) In a capitalist system, some people must win while others lose. That assumes that the free market system is a zero sum game like a sports contest, i.e. the Bears win and the Eagles lose. In a market sum game, everybody can win. Price is dependent upon supply and demand.

Doomsday Preparation

What You Need:

1. A sturdy army surplus backpack.

2. A first aid kit, including bandages, iodine, alcohol, gauze and painkillers.

3. Close range "melee" type weapons. I have a hand made bearded axe that will go through solid walls, a welder’s chipping hammer (nasty looking thing), bowie knife, and assorted pocket knives.

4. Long range weapons. You will need a rifle, not a sniper's rifle. Choose something that uses common ammunition, something you will not have a problem finding in looted sporting good stores, dead bodies and trashed houses. Choose something lite that you can strap to your back and above all MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

5. Clothing. At least one set each of hot weather and cold weather clothing, you can always ditch what you don't need.

6. Boots. A sturdy new pair of military combat boots, preferably steel toes. Trust me on the steel toes, when you're stuck with no weapons you'll be glad you have them. Make sure they are comfortable and broken in. Water proof boots are good for woodland areas, for areas like bayous and such make sure you have Vietnam era jungle boots.

7. Manuals. When you're on the run, starving, and out of water you won't be thinking clearly, manuals are a good way to ensure you will not forget important information. I currently have my improvised munitions handbook, an army wilderness survival handbook and a wilderness observation and tracking book.

8. Water. Make sure you have a canteen and get purification tablets to refill. I can't stress water enough.

9. Rain gear. This one is obvious.

10. A fire kit. When you're freezing in the woods you will not be able to rub two sticks together. Make sure all your matches and lighters are sealed in plastic. Bring kindling if you can. I have also included lighter fluid.

11. Light. Bring an army style red lensed flashlight. The red light will not ruin your night vision (your natural night vision) so you will not be left in the dark when you have to turn it off.

12. Medicine. Any important medication you may be on i.e. insulin, asthma medications.

13. Radios. If there are others in your group you will want to be able to communicate with them if you get lost.

14. Hand signals. If you have others in your group you will need to be able to communicate with them silently, make sure everyone in the group understands the hand signals.

15. Navigational equipment. Bring a compass and maps of the surrounding area. Good maps include road maps, hiking maps, and topographical maps. MAKE SURE you know how to use a compass and read a map.

16. Shelter. A tent if you can carry it, something that will keep you out of the wind and rain. If it's too big to carry in your bag and run at the same time leave it behind. You will then have to improvise.

17. A hand cranked radio. You will want to keep updated on new reports and such.

18. Batteries. Lots of batteries

19. A watch

20. Cooking equipment. This includes a pot of some sort, eating utensils, and something to cut wood with. I'd suggest a "Commando Saw" which is like barbed piano wire and will fit in your pocket.

21. Fishing equipment. Maybe not a rod, but bring hooks, lots of line, and lures. LEARN TO FISH

22. Knowledge. This is your absolute best weapon. Once you have chosen the place or area you will run to make sure you know it like the back of your hand. No doubt others have thought of the same location, it will be your knowledge of the area that makes your better. If there is a stream, know where it starts and where it goes. Know the hills, the mountains, the trails, the flora, fauna and climactic conditions year around.

USS Alfredo Gonzalez

On February 04, 1968, Marine sergeant Alfredo Gonzalez died near Thua Thien, Vietnam, after action that earned him the Medal of Honor. On January 31 the native of Edinburg, Texas, was commanding a platoon in a truck convoy formed to relieve pressure on the beleaguered city of Hue. After being wounded, he moved through a fire-swept area and rescued a wounded comrade. On February 3 he was again wounded, but refused medical treatment. The next day, as the enemy inflicted heavy casualties on his company, Gonzalez knocked out a rocket position and suppressed much enemy fire before falling. The missile destroyer USS Alfredo Gonzalez, named for him, is the first United States military ship named for a Hispanic.

South Carolina has an open primary: Democrats and independents may vote in the Republican primary if they so choose.

If no candidate takes 50% or more in the primary, a runoff will be held between the top two finishers.

Article V Convention of States

The Article V Convention of States is picking up steam.

If two-thirds of states submit an application to Congress, Congress must then call a Convention of States to propose amendments to the Constitution. Each state must then send an appointed delegation to the convention, where the delegates will discuss and vote upon amendment proposals.

There is support for a Convention of States for the purpose of establishing term limits for members of Congress and a balanced-budget amendment for the federal government.

South Carolina and Virginia became the first two states to call for a convention. On Dec. 7, more than 100 state legislators from 32 states met in Washington, D.C., to begin the groundwork for filing a Convention of States.

Just recently, Governors Jindal of Louisiana and Pence of Indiana expressed support for a Convention of States to control Federal spending.

The danger involved is that a runaway States Convention may radically amend our system of government.

In 2012 The Hawaii House of Representatives passed a resolution calling for an Article V Convention which would:
(1) A declaration of the constitutionality of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), including the individual mandate requiring the purchase of health insurance;
(2) An amendment to Article I, Section 5, to prohibit the supermajority cloture requirement under Rule 22 of the United States Senate for ending floor debates and filibusters, to facilitate a more reasonable voting standard for cloture;
(3) An amendment abolishing the electoral college established under Article II, Section 1, and providing for the direct election of the United States President and Vice President by voters; and
(4) An amendment to Article II, Section 2, Clause 2, to require that Senate confirmations of appointments of officers of the United States be made by a simple majority vote within sixty days of the nomination.

I am opposed to those amendments suggested by the Hawaii House of Representatives. Perhaps, instead of a general convention we could have a specific convention to propose amendments to establish term limits for members of Congress and a balanced budget amendment for the federal government. Those are two amendments to the Constitution that we desperately need. The federal government bureaucracy is out of control and will never reform itself. The Article V Convention of States may be our best hope to save the republic.

Evolution of the DAP

I’ve been looking into some of the history of the Dap, the greeting that can include slapping hands, bumping fists in any direction, snapping, wiggling fingers and other forms of contact which can last anywhere from a few seconds to more than a minute.

It was very popular with black (African-American) soldiers during the Vietnam war and has a history that predates that conflict. It may have been an acronym for dignity and pride (DAP) which certainly was evident during the Black Power movement of the civil rights era.

Some sources say that it dates to WWI and is more than a greeting as it tells the story of a black soldier and how he died.

It is also a form of sign language that can indicate agreement, celebration, or solidarity.

Some theorists claim that it is an acceptable way to show male affection.

Now it is used primarily as gang related and athletes greeting each other. Back in the 1950s, Dap was black slang for aware and up to date.

I first saw it in the Nam when it was the common greeting between black troops. Some of the white troops developed their own parody of the greeting called the “Milk Shake.” It ended up with the guys slapping their own asses.

I’ve seen people greeting each other with a fist bump and opening their hand dramatically. The Dap seems to have evolved into the high five and the chest bump.

Surviving a Mass Shooting

The odds of getting caught up in a mass shooting incident are astoundingly low. Despite the recent flurry of high-profile incidents, it’s unlikely you will ever need to utilize the following technique.

• If you are in a public area and someone starts shooting, try to evacuate if at all possible. If you cannot escape, lie down on the floor, face down.
• Point your feet in the direction of the shooter.
• Turn your head away and cover it with your hands. This will reduce the size of your target profile. It will minimize the likelihood of a bullet hitting any of your vital organs.

What's in a Name?

What's in a name? How many Black (politically correct: African-American) Americans have a Russian first name? I find it interesting that Barack and Michelle's youngest daughter's real name is Natasha, not Sasha as is frequently reported in the media. Barack's parents met in a Russian language class at the University of Hawaii in the early 1960s. They associated with leftists of all stripes including Frank Marshall Davis who later mentored Barack Obama. It has always been trendy for communist sympathizers to give their children Russian names. BO and Michelle named their first child Malia Ann, (one of the origins of Malia is a Swahili word meaning "queen" which is popular in Kenya, the birthplace of Obama's father; Ann, I'm sure pays homage to his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham). Their second child they named Natasha Obama. They have not released Natasha's middle name, although the middle initial M. is given on the Obama's public tax return (see below). Does it stand for Michelle or perhaps a Russian female name? Like many things about Barack Obama, it remains a mystery.
